Launched in late December 2023 as an “Activity Class,” BSPN has swiftly expanded into a thriving club, igniting passions for sports media among students across all grades.
Under the guidance of Baldwin Park High School teacher Joe Laski, BSPN has transcended traditional classroom learning by incorporating creative media skills. With a primary focus on sports media, the class and club aims to equip students with the knowledge needed to excel in various facets of the industry, from elevated journalism to producing media, and managing social media accounts.
Through strategic partnerships and immersive field trips, students have had the opportunity to learn from industry professionals alongside other high school students. A recent trip to Summit High School on January 17, 2024 provided invaluable insights into video production, initiating exciting collaborations, and the start of many learning opportunities to come.
“The goal is for students to see that professional roles exist for everyone. It is inspiring to see that some want to write, interview, run podcasts, and be on camera, while some prefer editing and being behind the scenes. This may lead them to study such areas in college and beyond in their career choices,” Baldwin Park High School BSPN teacher Joe Laski said.
With an initial core team of five enthusiastic students leading the charge, BSPN has grown to establish its place as a club of over 50 students. A key factor of BSPN's success lies in its inclusive approach. While the BSPN class operates during the school day, the club extends its reach beyond the classroom, engaging students from various backgrounds and grade levels. Through a dedicated Google Classroom, both class and club members actively participate in a range of activities, including recording interviews, crafting season previews, and contributing to ongoing projects.
From upcoming Q&A sessions with renowned sports personalities from Fox Sports, The SGV Tribune, and The Washington Post, to a tour of Dodger Stadium, students are eager to immerse themselves in the world of sports media. In April, BSPN students will receive a visit from Dodgers Hall of Fame Broadcaster Jaime Jarrin. Their positive response reflects the transformative impact of BSPN, not only in shaping future career paths but also in fostering a sense of community among students. Looking ahead, BSPN plans to introduce a full-length A-G course in hopes of being integrated into the school's curriculum, offering comprehensive education in sports media.
