COURSES OFFERED
 
MANDARIN CHINESE 1
This course is an introduction to Mandarin Chinese, the official language of China. The emphasis will be on spoken Mandarin. Students will learn basic conversational vocabulary and topics.

MANDARIN CHINESE 2
Students continue their study of Mandarin Chinese by further expanding their knowledge of key vocabulary, topics, and grammar concepts. Students not only begin to comprehend listening and reading passages more fully, but they also are able to express themselves more meaningfully in both speaking and writing.

SPANISH 1
This course is intended to introduce and develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in Spanish.

SPANISH 2
This course will continue to build on the foundations learned in Spanish 1. Students will advance their skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing in the Spanish language.

SPANISH 3
Provides a greater emphasis on the Spanish language, grammar, and culture. As part of the course, students will be afforded opportunities to read, write, hear, and speak Spanish while they work towards becoming linguistically and culturally literate.

SPANISH HONORS 1
Prerequisite: According to Spanish Placement Test
This course is designed for students who speak Spanish, but need additional instruction in reading and writing. Through directed instruction in grammar, as well as literary selections, students will increase vocabulary and reading skills.

SPANISH HONORS 2
This course is designed for students who speak Spanish, but need additional instruction in reading and writing. Through directed instruction in grammar, as well as supplementary literary selections, students will increase their vocabulary and develop their vocabulary and develop their reading skills.

SPANISH HONORS 3
Through curriculum based on literature, students will increase their vocabulary and reading skills. Students will participate in cultural activities with themes based on geography, history, folklore, and literature of Spanish-speaking cultures.

AP SPANISH LANGUAGE
A rigorous college-level curriculum is designed to prepare students for the AP Examination. There is extensive practice to increase students’ listening, speaking, reading (literature-based), and writing competency to the level required on the AP exam. Some colleges accept a score of 3, 4 or 5 on the AP exam as college credit in
this subject area. All students are expected to take the AP exam at the end of the course.

AP SPANISH LITERATURE
In this college-level course, students continue to develop their interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational skills in Spanish language as well as critical reading and analytical writing as they explore short stories, novels, plays, essays, and poetry from Spain, Latin America, and U.S. Hispanic authors along with other non-required texts. Some colleges accept a score of 3, 4 or 5 on the AP exam as college credit in this subject area. All students are expected to take the AP exam at the end of the course.
 

DUAL ENROLLMENT COLLEGE SPANISH (Spanish for the Spanish Speaker/

Continuing Spanish for the Spanish Speaker)

This course counts as TWO YEARS of a Language other than English in high school (20 credits with honors designation), as well as a total of 6 Units of transferable college credit (Degree Applicable, CSU, UC). It is designed for students who speak Spanish, but need additional instruction in reading and writing.
